Lemon Drizzle Cake – open to all

Each entry of a Lemon Drizzle cake should be submitted on a suitable serving platter eg plate (paper or china), cake-board etc.

Please use the following recipe:

  • 2 eggs at room temperature
  • 175g self-raising flour
  • 175g caster sugar
  • 100g soft margarine
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • finely grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 4 tbsp milk

For the drizzle:

  • 100g granulated sugar
  • juice of 1 lemon

1 x 2lb loaf tin, greased and lined

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Beat together the soft margarine, eggs, flour, caster sugar, milk, baking powder and lemon zest until smooth.
  3. Tip the batter into the prepared loaf tin and bake until golden brown.
  4. Make the topping by mixing together the granulated sugar and lemon juice.
  5. Pour the topping over the cake while still warm.
  6. Leave to cool before removing from the tin.

  • the word COLLECT if you do not wish to donate your cake to the tea tent. Please collect your cake from the WI tent between 3.30 and 4.00pm

 

Judging Criteria

A maximum score of 20 will be awarded as follows:

  • External appearance 4
  • Internal Condition 3
  • The drizzle     3
  • Flavour               10

Cheese scones – men only

Using a recipe of their choice, men are invited to present 6 identical cheese scones.

Please put a label on the underside of the serving platter with the following information clearly printed:

  • Full name of the baker
  • Mobile phone number
  • The word COLLECT if you do not wish to donate your scones to the tea tent. Please collect your scones from the WI tent between 3.30 and 4.00pm

Judging Criteria

A maximum score of 20 will be awarded as follows:

  • External appearance 4
  • Internal Condition 4
  • Flavour   12

 Fruit Chutney – open to all

Using a recipe of your choice you are invited to enter a sealed jar of fruit chutney.  Clearly state the fruit(s) used whether the chutney is mild or hot and the date of preserving on a label on the jar.  Please collect your chutney from the WI tent between 3.30 and 4.00pm

Please put a label on the underside of the jar with the following information clearly printed:

  • Full name of the baker
  • Mobile phone number

Judging Criteria

A maximum score of 20 will be awarded as follows:

  • Colour               4
  • Consistency 4
